Foelske’s 90th minute goal lifts Storm past Norse

INDIANOLA, Iowa – Jordyn Foelske's header goal with 30 seconds remaining lifted the Simpson College women's soccer team to a dramatic 3-2 victory over Luther at Buxton Stadium.

Just 30 seconds away from a second-straight draw, Foelske came up clutch for the Storm, finishing off a free kick by Julia Wagoner that was initially headed by Cassie Nash. Foelske was also responsible for the game-tying goal 18 minutes earlier and assisted Nash on the first goal of the night.

GOAL SUMMARY

  • The Storm (9-1-1, 2-0-0 A-R-C) claimed an early lead when Cassie Nash took a perfect pass up the middle from Jordyn Foelske to the back right corner of the net just over five minutes into the game.
  • Simpson maintained its lead for over 30 minutes before Maggie Haller knotted it up with a penalty shot, the first allowed by the Storm this season.
  • The Norse (4-4-4, 1-1-1 A-R-C) then took the lead right before the half as Kaitlyn Bebensee lobbed a header off a corner kick over the outstretched hands of Lani Mears.
  • Foelske and Nash reversed roles midway through the second half to level the game at 2-2 with just over 18 minutes to play.
  • Each team had one shot opportunity saved over the course of those 18 minutes as the game looked to be ending in a draw. However, with under a minute to go, the Storm drew a foul which set Julia Wagoner up with a free kick from 30 yards out. Her kick curved towards the goal and was initially headed by Nash before being sent to the back of the net by Foelske.

NOTES

  • Cassie Nash now has 50 career goals at Simpson, becoming just the fifth player in school history to reach the milestone. She needs five more goals to surpass Ashley Curran for the fourth-highest career total.
  • Nash's goal in 5:24 was her fastest of the season and sixth-fastest of her career.
  • Jordyn Foelske now has two career games with multiple goals. Her game-winning goal was her second time scoring in the final minute of regulation; she scored at the 89:02 mark of a 4-1 win over Monmouth during her freshman year.
  • Simpson improves to 4-0-0 at Buxton Stadium and 2-0-0 in conference play. The Storm are also 8-0-0 when scoring first as well as 8-0-0 when converting multiple goals.
  • This is the first time the Storm have allowed multiple goals in a game this year, but their fifth time scoring three goals.
  • Simpson extends its win streak against the Norse to four games, coming one game closer to leveling the all-time series which currently sits in favor of Luther, 18-17-3.
