Valadez, Baas lift Storm to season-opening win over Titans

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – The Simpson College women's soccer team opened up the 2023 season with a 2-0 win over Illinois Wesleyan on Friday.

The Storm (1-0-0) scored both goals in the first half, with Cassie Nash getting credit for the assist on both. Brissa Valadez found the back of the net just 2:01 into the game and freshman Averi Bass doubled the lead in the 35th minute.

NOTES

  • Illinois Wesleyan (0-1-0) came into the match as one of four teams receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches Preseason Top 25 Poll.
  • The win was Simpson's first over the Titans in program history. The two teams tied a year ago and Illinois Wesleyan won the other two matchups prior to that.
  • Simpson is now 2-2-2 in season openers under head coach Jeremy Reinert. 
  • Simpson has scored multiple goals in six consecutive regular season matches dating back to Oct. 11 of last season. The Storm were 11-0 when scoring more than once in 2022.

UP NEXT
Simpson hosts Macalester for its home opener on Sunday. Due to heat concerns, the match has been moved up to a 9 a.m. start.
