Compliance is doing the right thing because it is the right thing to do.

Compliance at Simpson College begins with Institutional Control, as the control and responsibility for the conduct of intercollegiate athletics shall be exercised by the institution itself and by the conference. Administrative control or faculty control, or a combination of both, shall constitute institutional control. The president of the institution is charged with the ultimate responsibility and final authority for the conduct of the intercollegiate athletics program and the actions of any board in control of the institution’s program.

A NCAA member institution shall designate an individual to serve as a faculty athletics representative. An individual shall be a member of the institution’s faculty or an administrator who holds faculty rank and shall not hold an administrative or coaching position in the athletics department. Currently, Kedron Bardwell and Barb Ramos, serve as A-R-C and NCAA Faculty Representatives for Simpson Athletics.

Each institution shall also establish a Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) for its student-athletes. The composition and duties of the committee shall be determined by the institution.  At Simpson College, each team has a member on the team’s roster that serves as a SAAC member on this committee. Many of our teams have two representatives on the committee, allowing for more participation, voices and points of view within the committee. This also allows a sophomore or junior who may be on the committee to serve for more than one year in that capacity.

Another very important part of NCAA Compliance is the actions of the “Representatives of Athletics Interests.” Part of the Athletic Administration responsibility is to be aware of the conduct of the individuals who act as supporters and boosters of Simpson Athletics and in what types of activities these supporters are involved. These activities include, but are not limited to, knowing about financial contributions to the athletics department or to an athletic booster organization of the institution, knowing about assistance in the recruitment of prospective student athletes, knowing about the assistance of providing benefits to enrolled student athletes and knowing about other activities in promoting the institution’s athletic programs. Once a person or organization has been identified as a representative of the institutions athletics interests, this identity is retained indefinitely. Therefore, it is imperative that all interests of Simpson Athletics programs act in accordance with NCAA and A-R-C bylaws.

Overall, it is the responsibility of each member institution to control its intercollegiate athletics program in compliance with the rules and regulations of the Association. The institution’s president is responsible for the administration of all aspects of the athletics program, including the approval of the budget and audit of all expenditures. The institution’s responsibility for the conduct of its intercollegiate athletics program includes responsibility for the actions of its staff members and for the actions of any other individual or organization engaged in activities promoting the athletic interests of the institution. 

For intercollegiate athletics to promote the character development of participants, to enhance the integrity of higher education and to promote civility in society, student-athletes, coaches, and all others associated with Simpson Athletics and events should adhere to such fundamental values as respect, fairness, civility, honesty and responsibility.  These values should be manifest not only in athletics participation but also in the broad spectrum of activities affecting the athletics programs.  It is the responsibility of Simpson College to establish policies for sportsmanship and ethical conduct in intercollegiate athletics consistent with the educational mission and goals of the institution and educate, on a continuing basis, all constituencies about the policies set forth by the institution.
