Last second basket sinks Simpson in loss to Knox

GALESBURG, Ill. - Despite a career-high 24 points from Levi Gurwell, and a double-double from Matt Schubert, the Storm fell 74-73 on a last-second game-winner to Knox on Tuesday afternoon.

Simpson (3-9) looked to end 2024 on a hot streak, coming into the contest against Knox (3-9) winners of two of its last three games. The Storm trailed last against Knox, 72-71, with less than a minute to go. Colton Rasmussen knocked down the go-ahead shot with just 29 seconds left to put Simpson back on top. On the final possession, Knox hit the eventual game-winner jumper with just seconds left to squeeze out with the victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Simpson jumped out to an early 9-3 lead on baskets from Gurwell, Schubert and Cam Henderson.
  • Gurwell connected on one of his three 3-pointers to stretch the lead out to 30-22 as Simpson continued to hold the lead throughout the first half, entering halftime with a 43-36 edge.
  • Knox managed to trim the lead down to four at the start of the second half before Simpson rallied around four straight baskets to open up their largest lead of the game at 63-51.
  • Over the final ten minutes of action, Simpson struggled to keep the offense flowing, being limited to 10 points on 4-for-16 shooting.
  • Knox used a 23-10 to close out the game, highlighted by a last second jumper to secure the result.
