Last second buzzer beater lifts Simpson to victory over St. Scholastica

DUBUQUE, Iowa - Not once but twice for Cam Henderson. The freshman drilled two 3-pointers in the final seconds of the game, including the last-second buzzer beater to give Simpson their first win of the season, 87-85, over St. Scholastica.

Henderson finished with 19 points but none were bigger than his final two buckets of the game. St. Scholastica (0-2) took a two-point lead with just 21 seconds left in the game. Out of the timeout, the Storm turned to Henderson, who connected for his second 3-pointer of the day to give Simpson a 84-83 lead with eight seconds left.

In what appeared to be the final possession of the game, St. Scholastica converted on a layup to regain a one-point lead with just a second on the clock. Despite the odds, Henderson and the Storm designed one final play that resulted in the freshman connecting on the game-winner, and stunning St. Scholastica.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • St. Scholastica led 21-20 at the halfway point of the first half before the Storm's offense found their groove. A 3-pointer from leading scorer Caden Rehmeier kickstarted the final ten minutes where Simpson scored 32 points.
  • Baskets from Henderson, Austin Murrow, and Nathaniel Winter helped the Storm close out the first half with a double-digit lead.
  • The Storm's second-half lead jumped out to 17 points after a 3-pointer from Bo Huston, the largest of the game.
  • St. Scholastica began chipping away at the lead over the next five minutes, cutting the lead down from 17 to three.
  • With 7:19 left in the game, St. Scholastica managed to tie the game at 71-71, and took their first second half lead at the 5:37 mark.
  • The two sides traded the lead back and forth eight times in the final five minutes, before Henderson's back-to-back 3-pointers sealed the game.
