Frazier captures conference decathlon title

STORM LAKE, Iowa — Isaac Frazier held off Central's Ryan Kruse to win the decathlon title, highlighting the second day of the Iowa Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Friday.

Frazier won the 110-meter hurdles on the second day of the decathlon to polish off his second Iowa Conference multi-event title. He tied for first in the high jump and 400 on Friday and set career bests in the shot put and and javelin throw on the weekend.

He started the day with a 267-point lead on Kruse, who was in fourth. Frazier held on to win by 86 points.

Frazier's point total is good for eighth in Division III and likely sewed up a spot at nationals. Frazier won the heptathlon at the 2016 IIAC Indoor Championship.

Frazier added an eighth-place finish in the high jump, clearing 6-feet, 3 1/2-inches. Isaiah Strong took sixth with a clearance of 6-5 1/2.

The Storm fared well in the prelims, getting top qualifying times from Dylan Kalinay in the 110 hurdles and Jordan Coughenour in the 400 hurdles. Chase Wetterling had the second-fastest qualifying time in the open 400 meters.

Kalinay leads a group of three finalists in the 110 hurdles. Kalinay ran 15.30, Frazier finished fifth in 15.46 and Sam Adeniyi secured the final lane with an eighth-place effort (15.71).

Coughenour ran 53.64 to best the field in the 400 hurdles. Trevor McKee qualified for finals with a seventh-place finish, crossing the line in 56.78.
