Coughenour, Wheatley lead Storm at Wartburg Select

WAVERLY, Iowa — Jordan Coughenour won the 600 meters and Emmitt Wheatley added a pair of runner-up finishes -- including one of the top times in the nation -- to lead the Simpson men's track and field team at the Wartburg Select on Saturday.

Simpson posted three times that land in the top 20 in Division III and another that leads the Iowa Conference, all without the services of All-American hurdler Dylan Kalinay. Simpson finished fifth with 88.5 points, behind three regionally-ranked teams and ahead of Dubuque, the third-ranked team in the Central Region.

Coughenour ran the 600 in 1:24.51, just two-tenths of a second off his season-best effort. The 4x200 relay team of Chase Wetterling, Kirk Wicks, Tate Tufte and Keagan Zwiefel added Simpson's other win, running an IIAC-best time of 1:32.23.

Wheatley placed second in the 60 and the 200, posting the No. 7 time in Division III in the 200. He ran the 60 in 7.02 and the 200 in 22.33. He currently owns Simpson's top qualifying time.

Travis Tupper and Isaac Frazier added third-place finishes and the 4x400-meter relay turned in the 19th-best time in Division III.

Tupper crossed the finish line just behind Wheatley in the 60, finishing in 7.04 seconds. Frazier, a national qualifier in the outdoor decathlon last year, scored 4,418 points to place third in the heptathlon, good for 19th in Division III. The 4x400 relay team of Wetterling, Wicks, Tupper and Coughenour finished in 3:24.20.
