Wheatley's huge day paces Storm at Grinnell

GRINNELL, Iowa — Emmitt Wheatley won both the 60- and 200-meter dash and earned Athlete of the Meet honors to lead the Storm at Grinnell's Darren Young Invitational at Charles Bear Athletic Center on Saturday.

Wheatley's effort in the 200 accounted for one of the Storm's two, national top-10 efforts on the day as the Storm ran to a third-place finish of 11 teams. The Storm scored 100 points, ahead of Iowa Conference foes Wartburg, Buena Vista, Central and Loras.

Simpson won four events on the day and posted eight, top-three finishes.

Wheatley set a meet record in the 200, crossing the finish line in 22.02 seconds. He broke his own school record in the event while posting the No. 4 time in all of Division III. The sophomore also won the 60 meters with a personal-best time of 6.94 seconds, the No. 2 effort in school history and the fastest by a Storm sprinter in 22 years. Just for good measure, he helped the 4x400 relay team to a third-place finish.

Not to be outdone, hurdler Dylan Kalinay had yet another career day. The junior didn't miss a beat after sitting out last week's meet, winning the 60 hurdles in a personal-best time of 8.20 seconds, his fourth personal best of the season. The effort puts him at No. 9 in Division III and moves him into third in school history, the quickest time by a Storm hurdler in 25 years.

Simpson's third gold medal finish came in the 4x200 relay, where the quartet of Tate Tufte, Keagan Zwiefel, Troy Vittetoe and Zach Nissen ran 1:33.48 to edge Augustana and Nebraska Wesleyan.

The Storm's lone second-place finish came from Isaac Frazier in the 60 hurdles (8.55). Travis Tupper came in third in the 60 (7.06) and fourth in the 200 (22.59) and Ian McKenzie took third with a season-best effort in the Mile (4:27.51).

The 4x400 relay team of Wheatley, Tupper, Jordan Coughenour and Chase Wetterling took third in 3:25.54.
