Storm men win second straight meet, crown three champions

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa — The Simpson men's track and field team was without one of the top sprinters in the region on Saturday, but it didn't matter.

The Storm won a team title for the second straight week, topping the 11-team field with 137 points at the Cornell Invitational on Saturday. Simpson crowned three individual champions and turned in 13, top-three finishes.

4x400 posts NCAA top-five time
Despite getting edged by Loras, the Storm's 4x400-meter relay team of Chase Wetterling, Travis Tupper, Matt Pearson and Jordan Coughenour posted the No. 4 time in Division III, running 3:17.72. Loras won the event in 3:16.67.

Strong, Meints, Coughenour win championships
Freshman Isaiah Strong earned his first collegiate win, clearing 6-feet, 4 3/4 inches in the high jump to edge teammate Isaac Frazier, who took second. Frazier cleared 6-2 3/4.

Braden Meints provided the Storm with their first win in a throwing event this season by taking first in the javelin throw. In his first year on the team, the junior launched the javelin 155-9 to beat teammate Matt Van Metre, who threw 143-6.

Coughenour led a strong group of Storm hurdlers in the 400 hurdles, winning the event in 55.00. Trevor McKee took third in 58.17 and Austin Greenwalt placed fourth in 58.26.

Strong showing in 110 hurdles
