Frazier takes 5th in decathlon, Kalinay qualifies for finals in 110 hurdles

GENEVA, Ohio — Isaac Frazier earned All-America honors in the decathlon and Dylan Kalinay claimed a lane in the finals of the 110-meter hurdles to highlight the second day of the 2017 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships for the Simpson men.

Frazier takes 5th in decathlon for All-America honors
Frazier used career-best efforts in the javelin throw and 1500 meters to become Simpson's fifth All-American decathlete. The senior closed his career with a lifetime-best 6,669 points in the event, 57 points ahead of Wis.-Eau Claire's Dylan Cooper.

Frazier finished third in the 110 hurdles to start the day, running 14.94. He added a fourth-place finish in the discus throw (124-feet, 6 1/2-inches) before clearing a season-best 12-1 1/2 in the pole vault. Needing strong performances in the final two events to secure a place on the podium, the senior responded with career-bests in the javelin throw (148-1) and 1500-meter run (4:49.46).

He is Simpson's first All-American decathlete since John Cord in 2013 and turned in the program's best finish in the event since 1989.

Kalinay qualifies for finals in 110 hurdles
Despite racing just once for the better part of a month, Kalinay -- a returning All-American -- posted the ninth and final qualifying time, crossing the finish in 14.54. Kalinay ran the fifth-fastest time in the country in late April but sustained a hamstring injury that hampered the final weeks of the season.  The junior will run in the final at Noon Central on Saturday.

Wetterling places 16th in the 400
Competing as an individual at nationals for the first time in his career, Chase Wetterling ran 49.13 in the 400 meters to place 16th. The sophomore used a big effort at the Augustana Twilight Qualifier to make the national field and also ran on Simpson's 4x400 relay team that finished 11th in yesterday's prelims.

Coming up Saturday
Kalinay will run in the 110 hurdle final at Noon and Jordan Coughenour will compete in the 400 hurdle final at 1:25.
