Wheatley, Kalinay post personal-bests in indoor opener

PELLA, Iowa — It may only be December, but Emmitt Wheatley and Dylan Kalinay looked to be in midseason form as the Simpson men's track and field team opened the indoor season at the Central Dutch Holiday Preview on Saturday.

The duo of Wheatley and Kalinay posted two of the top-five times in Division III in the 60-meter dash and 60-meter hurdles, respectively, leading the Storm to a fifth-place finish of 12 teams. Simpson posted six, top-five efforts on the day.

Wheatley ran the 60 in a personal-best 6.96 seconds, the fifth-fastest time in the NCAA and tied for the second-quickest in school history. He finished in second, .04 seconds behind Drake's Demetrius Shelton.

Kalinay -- a national qualifier in the 110-meter hurdles outdoors a year ago -- ran the third-fastest time in the NCAA in the 60-meter hurdles, finishing in 8.26 seconds. He took second overall behind William Jewell's Blake Alexander.

Jordan Coughenour added a second-place effort in the 600 meters, running 1:25.39.
