Coughenour repeats in the 400 hurdles, 4x1 sets new school mark
STORM LAKE, Iowa — Jordan Coughenour captured a second-straight title in the 400 hurdles, the 4x100-meter relay team set a school record and the Simpson men's track and field team turned in five, top-three finishes on the final day of the 2017 Iowa Conference Outdoor Championships.
The Storm placed sixth in the team standings with 76 points. Wartburg won the championship with 160.
After posting the top qualifying time in Friday's prelims, Coughenour -- who sustained an ankle injury during the race -- finished second behind Wartburg's Nick Kennicker. But after a review, Kennicker was disqualified for a hurdle violation, allowing Coughenour to take the title for the second year in a row.
The quartet of Zach Nissen, Chase Wetterling, Travis Tupper and Tate Tufte set a new school mark in the 4x100-meter relay, running 41.68 to place second. Tufte crossed the finish line just behind Dubuque's Colfay Pointer for the silver, but the foursome edged the previous mark of 41.73 set just last season by Emmitt Wheatley, Dylan Kalinay, Travis Tupper and Davey Jergens at the Wis.-La Crosse NCAA Qualifier.
In addition to the 4x100, the Storm captured two more second-place finishes on the day.
Chase Wetterling came in second in the 400 meters, running a career-best 48.09 in the process. The mark is currently 19th in Division III and allowed Wetterling to take home the first all-conference honor in the 400 of his career.
The other second-place effort came from Isaac Frazier in the 110-meter hurdles. Following his championship in the decathlon the day before, Frazier ran 15.00 to finish second behind Coe's Chris Hawkins. Freshman Sam Adeniyi came in fourth in 15.25.
Additional Notes
• Dylan Kalinay had the top qualifying time in the 110 hurdles but was held out of the final with a sore hamstring. The junior ran 15.30 to win the prelims Friday in his first race back from the injury.
• Frazier accounted for 20 points on the weekend, adding eighth-place finishes in the high jump and triple jump to his title in the decathlon and runner-up finish in the 110 hurdles.
