Coughenour, Wetterling lead big efforts by Storm runners

DUBUQUE, Iowa — Jordan Coughenour and Chase Wetterling each posted top-25 times in Division III and helped the 4x400 relay crack the top 10 as the Simpson men's track and field team competed at Loras' Dr. Tucker Open on Friday.

The Storm took home four event titles and had nine, top-3 performances in the final tune-up before next weekend's Iowa Conference Championships.

Coughenour lowered his conference-leading time in the 400 hurdles, running 53.38 to win the event and post the 10th-best time in the country in the process. The mark also breaks into the top-5 in school history at No. 5.

Wetterling also tallied a top-5 effort in school history, running 48.33 in the 400. He took second in the event and is currently second in the Iowa Conference and 21st in Division III. The mark is No. 5 in school history.

Coughenour and Wetterling teamed up to help the 4x400 post a new season-best, joining Travis Tupper and Kirk Wicks. The quartet ran 3:15.38, good for second in the IIAC and ninth in Division III (fifth if you remove all duplicates). Simpson's previous effort of 3:15.58, which was the top time in the nation in mid-April, is now 10th.

The Storm had a strong showing in the 110 hurdles led by a personal-best effort from Isaac Frazier. Frazier ran 14.87 to place second, currently the No. 3 time in the IIAC. Sam Adeniyi placed seventh in 15.96, but ran a personal-best 15.07 in the prelims, good for fifth in the conference.

Simpson got additional event titles from Adeniyi and Isaiah Strong, who tied for first in the high jump. Josh Dietrich won the javelin throw and the 4x100 relay of Wetterling, Tupper, Zach Nissen and Tate Tufte posted the No. 2 time in the IIAC and fourth-fastest in school history (41.97).
