Storm close nonconference slate against St. Catherine

INDIANOLA, Iowa -- Simpson College women's soccer capped off its nonconference slate Tuesday in a home battle against St. Catherine, but fell short in a 3-1 match.

The Wildcats (5-1-2) collected an early 1-0 tilt in the second minute after Taylor Johnson placed a 35-yard free kick into the back of the net. The lead stood the rest of the half for St. Catherine.

In the 51st minute, junior Cassie Nash scored her third goal in two contests to knot the match for the Storm (6-3-1). Senior Megan Roberts lobbed the ball down the middle of the field to allow Nash to outrun two defenders and corral the ball past the goalie for the equalizer.

Less than 15 seconds later the visitors were able to regain the lead as Amanda Elton lofted a shot over Simpson's Brooklyn Scanlon in goal. The Wildcats padded the cushion with a goal in the 88th minute.

The Storm had a chance to tie the match in the 75th minute after Roberts received a hard foul near the goal. Freshman Maddie Hays was tasked with the penalty kick opportunity but a leaping Kelsey Dugan deflected the shot and Hays sent the rebound to the left.

Scanlon ended with five saves in her first collegiate start and second appearance for Simpson.
