Naasz boots game-winner in 2-1 victory

INDIANOLA, Iowa -- Simpson College women's soccer scored two goals in four minutes to snap a six-match winless streak against Augustana (Ill.) in a 2-1 victory on Tuesday.

Both teams were held scoreless through 74 minutes of action before sophomore Hailey Kowzan found the back of the net in the 75th minute for her third goal of the season. Kowzan worked with freshman Jordyn Foelske on the goal as the duo executed a give-and-go on the play to hand the Storm (5-2-1) a 1-0 tilt.

Freshman Liz Naasz tallied her second netter of the season in the 78th minute while falling to the side on a 25-yard boot. Junior Lizzie Arnburg sliced the ball to a sprinting Naasz, who put enough power on the kick to push the ball through the hands of the Vikings' (3-3-0) goalkeeper.

Augustana responded with a goal in the 81st minute to trim the deficit in half, but Simpson held on for its third straight home victory to begin the season.

Junior Cassie Nash nearly broke the nil-nil tie in the opening half. Nash broke through the Augustana backline and only had the goalie to beat, but lifted the ball a few inches above the crossbar in the ninth minute.

The Storm reached 20 shot attempts for the third time this season by owning a 20-12 advantage in the nonconference battle. Nine of those shots were on-goal for Simpson.

Sophomore Brenny Frederick tallied three saves in the contest to grab her fourth win of the season and the eighth of her career.
