Six Storm athletes ready to compete at NCAA Championships

INDIANOLA, Iowa - Three men and three women from the Simpson College track and field teams will compete in the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

The six athletes will compete in seven events, led by Spencer Moon competing in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters. Ulysses Patterson will compete in the decathlon, while Max Cleveland rounds out the Storm men's representation in the 110 meter hurdles. The Storm women's distance duo of Lara Kallem and Teghan Booth are set to race in the 10,000 meters, while Maddie Hays closes it out for the team in the 400 meter hurdles.

WHAT'S AT STAKE

  • First Team All-America status is awarded to athletes finishing 1-8 in each event, while Second Team All-American status is awarded to those finishing 9-16 (individual events) and 9-10 (relays) in each event.
  • For the hurdle events, the winner of each of the three heats will advance to the final, along with the next five fastest times.

ABOUT THE STORM

  • The Storm men come in ranked ninth in the midwest region and 23rd nationally.
  • All three Storm male competitors earned all-region honors earlier this week, while Kallem and Hays took home the award for the Storm women.
  • Moon won his eighth straight conference championship race in the 10,000 meters this past month. The Lake City, Iowa native is ranked in the top five nationally in both the 5,000 and 10,000 meters, holding the school and conference records in each as well.
  • Moon, competing in his tenth straight national meet, is looking to earn his fourth and fifth career All-American honors after earning two at the indoor championships this season and his 2022 honor at the cross country championships.
  • Cleveland is gunning for his second straight All-American honor in the 110 meter hurdles after a seventh-place finish last season. The Indianola native holds a career-best time of 14.32, just .02 seconds off the school record, collecting his sixth all-conference award.
  • Patterson took second in the decathlon at the conference championships, setting a new personal best of 6,664 points that ranks fourth all-time in school history. Patterson is ranked eighth in the country and is seeking his second straight All-American honor after garnering second team accolades in the indoor pentathlon.
  • Kallem and Booth will compete in the 10,000 meters after both finished with top 15 times in the country, broke the previous school record, and earned all-conference awards in the event.
  • Kallem is racing at her third national championships meet, while Booth is getting her first opportunity on the national stage.
  • Hays is also competing at her first national championship meet, racing in the 400 meter hurdles. Hays's time of 1:02.11 is 0.2 seconds off the school record and earned her the silver medal in the event at the conference championships.
