Kallem takes home performer of the week award

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - After her record-breaking performance in the 10,000 meters last weekend, Lara Kallem of the Simpson College women's track and field team won the American Rivers Conference Women's Track Performer of the Week award.

Kallem is earning her first weekly conference award for the Storm, after breaking the school record in the 10,000 meters at the Phil Esten Challenge in La Crosse, Wis. She was the top collegiate finisher in the race, placing second overall in a time of 35:10.24, breaking Jen Wendt's previous record by over two minutes.

"It's great to see Lara recognized for her outstanding performance in La Crosse," said Storm director of track and field and cross country Heath Moenck. "She has had a remarkable senior year and we're looking forward to more terrific races."

Kallem is the first Storm female track athlete to take home a weekly conference honor since Simpson Hall of Fame member Catie Ellingson in 2012. Her performance in the 10,000 meters currently ranks her 10th among all Division III competitors in the event.

Kallem and the Storm will compete at their annual home meet, the Kip Janvrin Open, beginning on Thursday. A couple athletes are also scheduled to compete at the Drake Relays.
