Storm continue NCAA run against top-ranked Bears

INDIANOLA, Iowa – The Simpson College women's soccer team continues its NCAA Tournament run on Sunday night against No. 1 Washington-St. Louis.

The Storm advanced to the Round of 32 for the second straight season and third time in program history with a 2-1 double overtime victory over Wis.-La Crosse last night. WashU took down DePauw in the first round 2-0 to remain undefeated on the year.

Tonight's game will be the first-ever meeting between Simpson and WashU.

ABOUT THE STORM

  • The Storm are currently 15-2-3 and making their second consecutive appearance in the NCAA Second Round.
  • The Storm held an unblemished record through their first 13 games, a program first.
  • Fourteen different players have scored for the Storm this season led by Cassie Nash's 19 goals. Seniors Maddie Hays and Hailey Kowzan rank second with six, while Jordyn Foelske and Savannah Schneider have each scored five times.
  • Along with their goals, Kowzan has dished out 11 assists, Nash has tallied eight, and Foelske has recorded six.
  • Meredith Downs is 13-2-3 as the Storm's starting goalkeeper in 2024, making 61 saves and boasting a 0.91 goals against average.
  • The Storm defense has blanked 10 opponents, while the offense has outscored opponents 60-16.
  • Downs, Hays, Kowzan, Nash and Wagoner all landed on the All-A-R-C First Team earlier this week, while Foelske, Ally Hoffa, Savannah Schneider and Elle Street garnered honorable mention accolades.

ABOUT THE BEARS

  • WashU enters the second round with an undefeated record of 18-0-2.
  • Last season, the Bears cruised through the first three rounds of the NCAA Tournament before edging Wis.-La Crosse and Messiah in back-to-back penalty kick shootouts to advance to the championship match. They fell 1-0 to California Lutheran.
  • Olivia Clemons leads the Bears with 18 goals and 41 points.
  • Grace Ehlert has also registered double-digit goals with 12, tallying five gamewinners.
  • Fourteen other players have found the back of the net for WashU, which has outscored opponents 70-6.
  • Sidney Conner is 16-0-2 between the posts, making 31 saves and contributing to 12 of the team's 14 shutouts.
  • The Bears have not lost at home since Oct. 29 of last season and are 19-1-2 the last two seasons.
