Nash grabs hat trick, Simpson downs Central in first league action

PELLA, Iowa – Cassie Nash's fifth career hat trick powered the Simpson College women's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over Central in both team's American Rivers Conference opener on Saturday.

Hailey Kowzan assisted Nash in scoring in the fifth and 65th minutes, the 16th and 17th connection between the duo while at Simpson. Ally Hoffa provided the assist on Nash's second goal in the 57th minute, which goes down as the graduate student's 20th career gamewinner.

The Storm (6-0-3) outshot the Dutch (7-4-0, 0-1 A-R-C) 30-7 on their way to their eighth straight win in the series. Central's Kylie Bloomstrom scored in the 60th minute to cut Simpson's lead to 2-1, but the home team managed just one other shot on goal against Simpson's defense.  

NOTES

  • This is the first time in program history Simpson has been undefeated through nine games.
  • Cassie Nash now has five career hat tricks and has recorded at least one point in all but one game this season.
  • Meredith Downs remains undefeated through 17 career starts, boasting a record of 13-0-4 with six solo shutouts and two combined clean sheets. She is tied for ninth all-time in career wins. 
  • Twenty of Simpson's 23 goals have been scored by its graduating class, including all three today.
  • The Storm have found the back of the net first in all but one contest this season, which was a scoreless draw.
  • Simpson has scored at least two goals in every game this season except its scoreless tie on Sept. 3.
  • Simpson remains unbeaten and has not faced a deficit through nine games. 
  • Hailey Kowzan and Nash have teamed up to score 17 goals throughout their careers at Simpson. Kowzan has assisted Nash on 14 career goals, while Nash has returned the favor three times.
  • Nash surpasses Erin Goettl (174, 2001-03) for the second-most career points at Simpson. She's three goals away from moving past Goettl on the all-time goals leaderboard as well.
  • The Storm are now 3-2-2 in conference openers under head coach Jeremy Reinert. This is the second year in a row Simpson was victorious in its season-, home- and league-opening games.
  • Simpson improves to 24-9-2 in the head-to-head series with Central, winning the last eight matchups.

The Storm are set to make up their nonconference game against Westminster originally scheduled for Sept. 4 this coming Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
