No. 6 Simpson collects home victory in season opener

INDIANOLA, Iowa -- The No. 6 Simpson College women's basketball team opened the 2021-22 campaign with an 85-61 victory over Gustavus Adolphus in front of their home crowd on Friday evening.

The Storm (1-0) shot 48.6 percent from the floor and converted 10 three-pointers to push their win streak to 13 games dating back to Jan. 23, 2021. The Golden Gusties (0-1) were held to a 38.5 percent shooting clip and made just two of 18 attempts behind the arc.

A 13-2 run in the final three minutes of the first quarter helped propel the Storm to a 27-18 advantage at the start of the second frame. Simpson then extended its lead to as many as 21 in the quarter much thanks to 6-of-8 shooting from downtown. The teams went into the locker room with a 53-34 score in favor of the Storm.

Gustavus Adolphus was able to pull the score within 10, 62-52, with less than a minute of the third quarter left, but the Storm worked together to produce 12 unanswered points to regain a comfortable lead in the fourth and cruise to the season-opening win.

Jenna Taylor led the way for the Storm with 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting and 14 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Cassie Nash contributed 16 points and had four steals, and Cameron Kincaid also hit double figure scoring with 13 points.
