Game-winner leads to A-R-C honor for Freland

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- A week after hitting the game-winning shot against No. 4 Wartburg, No. 10 Simpson College women's basketball's Regan Freland has been named the American Rivers Conference Athlete of the Week, the league announced Monday.

The Storm (9-0, 8-0 A-R-C) have been popular among the conference's voters this season by receiving five of the seven women's basketball weekly awards. Freland joins Jenna Taylor and Cameron Kincaid as the other recipients for head coach Brian Niemuth's squad this year, with Taylor tallying three during her senior slate.

Freland had a career-high 17 points during Simpson's 81-80 double overtime victory over the Knights last Monday. The Prairie City, Iowa native connected on a last second 3-pointer to give Simpson its second victory in three attempts against Wartburg and also handed the Storm the No. 1 seed in this year's A-R-C Tournament.

The freshman ended with five 3-pointers in the contest and went 6-for-11 from the floor for a 54.5% shooting clip in 27 minutes of work off the bench.

Simpson returns to the hardwood Tuesday night for a 7 p.m. game against ninth-seeded Luther (1-9, 8-0 A-R-C) inside Cowles Fieldhouse in the A-R-C Tournament Quarterfinals.
