Women’s soccer advances to semifinal round

INDIANOLA, Iowa – The No. 3-seeded Simpson College women's soccer team topped No. 6-seeded Central 2-1 in the first round of the American Rivers Conference Tournament on Saturday evening inside Buxton Stadium.

With the win, the Storm (11-5-1, 6-2 A-R-C) will head to Waverly to face No. 2-seed Wartburg for the semifinal round for the second year in a row. The Knights suffered their first loss of the season to regular season conference champions, Loras, last Tuesday.

Cassie Nash scored in the sixth and seventh minutes to provide the Storm an early 2-0 advantage. Central (9-6-2, 3-3-2 A-R-C) cut the lead in half on a Grace Coates goal in the 20th minute and the teams went into the break with the home team ahead by one.

The Dutch earned a penalty kick opportunity less than a minute into the second half, but a huge save by Lani Mears kept Simpson's lead intact. Mears made a total of eight saves during the contest and earned her 10th win of the season.
