Simpson cruises to first A-R-C victory

INDIANOLA, Iowa – Megan Roberts scored twice, the defense allowed just three shots and the Simpson College women's soccer team cruised to a 4-1 win over Coe in its first American Rivers Conference contest of the season Saturday.

The Storm (4-3-1, 1-0 A-R-C) found the back of the net twice in each half and registered 34 shots in the game with 11 players taking at least one. Head coach Jeremy Reinert used 24 total players in the victory as Simpson opened A-R-C play 1-0 for the first time since 2012.

For the second consecutive game, Simpson cracked the scoreboard less than five minutes into the contest as Jordyn Foelske took a pass from Cassie Nash and shot it into the far corner for her third goal of the season.

Coe (0-8-1, 0-1 A-R-C) tied the match in the 29th minute on a lucky shot from Ella Weber that caught the wind and bounced in off the goalpost, but the Storm responded just 57 seconds later to regain the lead. Avery Plathe sent the ball in from the right and Roberts tapped in a wide open shot for her first score of the game and season.

Simpson tacked on two more goals in the second half to stretch its lead to three. Nash and Brissa Valadez teamed up for the fourth time this season in the 66th minute and Roberts scored her second goal of the game in the 79th minute with the help of Hailey Kowzan.

The Storm almost went up by four with five minutes remaining, but Robert's penalty kick attempt hit the crossbar. The penalty kick try was the second of the game; the Kohawks also missed their opportunity in the 68th minute as Lani Mears came up with a huge save to prevent the visitors from tying the game a second time.

Roberts led the home team with eight shots, while Nash and Foelske eached placed 3-of-4 shots on target.
