Simpson trio earn player of the week honors
INDIANOLA, Iowa – Three Simpson College athletes have been recognized by the American Rivers Conference as players of the week for their respective sports.
Storm football's J Jensen III was named Offensive Player of the Week, while Lani Mears and Cassie Nash swept the women's soccer honors as Defensive and Offensive Player of the Week, respectively.
This is the third week in a row and fourth time this season Nash has earned player of the week accolades. Mears and Jensen both pick up their first career weekly honor.
The Storm football team will be back in action this weekend at Wartburg, while the women's soccer team continues tournament play at Wartburg on Wednesday.
J Jensen III - Football Offensive Player of the Week
- Propelled Simpson to a big conference win over Nebraska Wesleyan with seven total touchdowns
- Completed 18 of 27 passes for 371 yards, six touchdowns and no interceptions
- Also rushed for touchdown early in the first quarter
- Tied a 19-year-old school record for single-game passing touchdowns as well as a a 24-year-old program mark for total touchdowns
- His efforts helped Simpson to it's largest scoring output since 1998
Lani Mears - Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
- Went 2-0 between the posts, improving to 10-4-1 on the season
- Recorded her sixth shutout of the year in the Storm's regular season finale
- Made eight saves in Simpson's tournament win over Central, including a huge penalty kick stop early in the second half that preserved the team's lead
Cassie Nash - Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week
- Had a goal and an assist in Simpson's regular season finale against UW-River Falls
- Lifted the Storm to a tournament win over Central with sixth multi-goal performance of the season
- Has tallied at least seven points in each of the last three weeks
