Nash picks up second player of the week honor
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – After tallying 13 points fueled by a five-goal performance at Luther, senior Cassie Nash has been named the American Rivers Conference Offensive Player of the Week.
Nash is the first Simpson athlete to earn multiple weekly honors from the conference this year. She was previously named women's soccer player of the week on Sept. 12.
In the Storm's 6-1 win over Central last Tuesday, Nash scored her ninth goal of the season in the 21st minute to give Simpson an early 3-0 lead. She later assisted Megan Roberts to her third goal of the game, helping her teammate become the first player to record a hat trick in five years. It was the fifth time this season Nash has both scored and assisted on a goal in a match.
Nash followed up her Tuesday performance with something no other Simpson women's soccer player has done in nearly 20 years - scoring five goals in a single game. Her goals came consistently throughout the game with three in the first half (15', 26', 42') and two in the second (47', 60').
It was the first time someone in the conference has scored five goals in a single game since 2016 (Georgia Straka, Nebraska Wesleyan vs Mount Mary, 9/10/16) and the first in a league match since 2002 (Katie Pettigrew, Luther at Upper Iowa, 11/2/02). The last time Simpson had someone score 5+ goals was in 2003 when Erin Goettl found the back of the net a school-record seven times against Upper Iowa.
The Lincoln, Neb. native now ranks first in the A-R-C with nine goals and 21 points in league play. Overall, she has scored a career-high 14 goals to rank second in the conference and 14th in Division III.
Simpson has two more conference matches on tap before closing out the regular season next Tuesday against UW-River Falls. The Storm will play their final road game of the regular season on Wednesday at Nebraska Wesleyan and will host Dubuque for Senior Day on Saturday.
