WAVERLY, Iowa -- In the last series on the road for the season, the Simpson baseball team dropped a doubleheader at Wartburg on Monday. The Storm lost 6-5 in the opener and 4-2 in the nightcap.
Simpson is now 12-21 and 4-17 in the American Rivers Conference, while the Knights are 11-23 and 8-13 in the league.
Wartburg 6, Simpson 5
The Storm put a run on the board early in the first after a Nathan Carlin RBI single scored Devin Creger. Wartburg tallied two runs in the bottom of the first to take the 2-1 advantage, but Simpson answered with one of their own to tie it up in the second when Kolton Arnold scored on a passed ball.
In the fourth, the visitors added another to go out on top 3-1. Noah Sacco drilled a double to center to score Creger once again. The Knights responded with a pair in the fifth to regain the lead at 4-3.
Simpson surged for two in the seventh on an RBI from Arnold and Tyrese Moore laid down a sacrifice bunt to plate Carlin. The Storm lost the 5-4 lead in the eight when Wartburg scored the two runs on three hits.
In the ninth, the Storm had a rally just fall short after getting a runner to second. Truman Schmitt finished with three hits, including a double.
Brady Held had another strong performance on the hill and had eight strikeouts in 7.1 innings of work.
Wartburg 4, Simpson 2
Held carried his strong showing from the first game into the second game, this time at the plate. The freshman ripped a two-out single to plate two runs in the sixth to tie it at 2-2.
The Knights rebounded and tacked on a run in the bottom half of the frame and another in the eighth for some insurance.
Held finished with two of the team's five hits and Schmitt added another for four on the day.
Up Next
Simpson closes the season out this weekend with a series against Luther. The first game will begin at 6 p.m. on Friday, with the doubleheader to begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday. The team will honor its three seniors in between the contests on Saturday, Nathan Carlin, Devon Veach and Steve Carlson.
