Held throws gem in win over Central

INDIANOLA, Iowa -- Freshman Brady Held struck out 11 batters as the Simpson baseball team won 8-2 over Central in the opener of the American Rivers Conference doubleheader on Tuesday. The Storm closed out the day with an 8-5 loss to the Dutch at McBride Field.

Simpson is now 12-18 and 4-14 in the conference, while Central improves to 19-13 and 9-12 in league play.

Simpson 8, Central 2
Held started his afternoon with a quick strikeout to begin the game and had nine through the fourth and seventh innings combined.

After going down 1-0 in the top of the first, the Storm's offense came alive and scored run runs over the first three frames. Kolton Arnold led the way by driving in two runs in that span to jumpstart the rally as the team had three extra base knocks.

Simpson added another run in the sixth to make it 7-1 and tallied an insurance run in the eighth for good measure as Nathan Carlin and Truman Schmitt both had sacrifice flies.

The Dutch put one across in the ninth to cut it to 8-2, but the Storm held strong and pulled out the victory.

The Storm's 13 hits are the most since they had 13 against Bethany Lutheran on March 31. Josh Breitbarth and Devin Creger each finished with three.

Held finished by going seven-strong innings of four-hit ball and gave up one run to push his record to 5-1.

Central 8, Simpson 5
Simpson gained an early 3-1 tilt after four innings of play, but gave up four runs in the fifth to go down 5-3. The visitors would add a run in each inning over the last three, while the Storm could only tally two in that span.

The Storm made a threat in the eighth by loading the bases with no outs, but the Central defense would tighten and only give up one run. In the ninth, Simpson put together another rally and loaded the bases with two outs, but could not complete the comeback.

Nathan Carlin, Tyrese Moore and Schmitt all had two hits, with Moore showcasing his speed for a triple.
