Storm sweep Buena Vista, win conference-opening series

INDIANOLA, Iowa -- Zach Hollingsworth got it done at the plate and on the mound to lead the Simpson baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of Buena Vista on Saturday, winning game one 8-5 and game two 9-7. The Storm took 2 of 3 in the conference-opening series.

The Storm improved to 8-3 on the year and 2-1 in the American Rivers Conference, matching last year's win total in just 11 games. The Beavers dropped to 7-9 overall and 1-2 in conference play after winning the series opener Friday night.

Hollingsworth finished the day with a triple, a home run and three RBIs in addition to earning the save in game two.

Simpson 8, Buena Vista 5 (Game 1)
Nathan Carlin's two-RBI double sparked a three-run first as Simpson built a 4-0 lead. Buena Vista pulled within 5-4 in the seventh before Simpson added three insurance runs in the home half. Tyrese Moore and Richie Hintz plated RBI singles in the inning.

Dustin Werner tossed a scoreless ninth to earn his first career save, getting three straight outs after issuing a leadoff walk. He came on in relief of Brady Held (3-0), who allowed five runs—four earned—off eight hits in eight solid innings of work.

Simpson took advantage of six Buena Vista errors, scoring four unearned runs.

Simpson 9, Buena Vista 7 (Game 2)
The Storm had to come from behind in the nightcap, erasing a 2-0 deficit with six runs in the fourth. Truman Schmitt led off the inning with a solo shot to dead center, his second long ball of the season. Devin Creger's RBI single tied the game and Carlin scored the go-ahead run on a Moore groundout. Hollingsworth put an exclamation point on the rally with a three-run bomb over the left field fence.

Simpson built a 9-4 lead before the Beavers crept back into the game with three runs in the seventh. But Jonathan Sailstad (1-0) got out of bases-loaded jam in the eighth and Hollingsworth tossed 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to earn the save.

Josh Breitbarth went 3-for-4 with a double to lead the Storm at the plate. Creger went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Moore drove in three runs.
