Storm unable to slow Coe offense in loss

INDIANOLA, Iowa -- Truman Schmitt drove in two runs to highlight the Simpson baseball team's 12-2 loss against No. 15 Coe on Friday at McBride Field.

The Storm (11-15, 3-11 A-R-C) gave up an 8-0 lead through the first three innings before Schmitt came through with his one-out double to plate Noah Sacco and Josh Breitbarth. Schmitt is fourth on the team with six two-baggers.

The Kohawks (26-2, 16-1 A-R-C) added another run in the fifth to make it 9-2 and tallied three more in the seventh after back-to-back triples started the inning off. Coe was able to make it a two-run gap and held on in the bottom of the frame to enforce the run rule.

Simpson had a late rally in the seventh to extend the game with Richie Hintz grabbing his third double of the year with one out, but was stranded after the next batter popped up and then the next hitter grounded out to end the contest.

The Storm collected three hits as a whole, with Nathan Carlin securing the only single of the game for the home squad.

The Kohawks are leading the conference with 11.7 hits per game and had 15 tonight, the most the Storm have allowed all year.

Tanner Jansen took the loss for Simpson and is now 3-5 during his junior campaign.

Both teams resume the series tomorrow at McBride Field. First game will begin at 1 p.m. with the second to follow.
