Storm play longball in doubleheader split with Cornell

INDIANOLA, Iowa -- Nathan Carlin homered, Tanner Jansen tossed complete-game and the Simpson baseball team beat Cornell 5-3 in game one to split Wednesday's doubleheader at McBride Field. The Rams won game two 9-6.

The Storm are now 9-4 on the season, surpassing last season's win total with the game one victory. Truman Schmitt also homered on the day.

Simpson 5, Cornell 3
Carlin crushed a three-run bomb in the bottom of the first to give Simpson a 3-2 lead and the Storm never looked back. Jansen did the rest on the mound, holding Cornell to two hits over the final four innings. He struck out eight and walked three on the day, improving to 3-1 on the season.

The Storm got solid production out of their number eight and nine batters, as freshmen Tyrese Moore and Richie Hintz combined to go 4-for-5. Moore drove in an insurance run in the sixth inning, giving Simpson a 5-3 lead on an RBI single.

Cornell 9, Simpson 6
Schmitt's two-run shot pulled Simpson within 6-5 in the fifth inning but Cornell tacked on three runs in the seventh to pull away for the win. The Rams scored three runs in the first and Simpson never fully recovered. Moore and Josh Breitbarth had two hits apiece to lead Simpson while Devin Creger went 1-for-3 with a triple and a sacrifice fly.

Brady Leonard suffered the loss, allowing four runs—one earned—in three innings. He struck out four in his first career start. Simpson sent six pitchers to the mound and was hurt by four errors that resulted in four unearned runs.

Simpson travels to Mankato, Minn. for a three-game set against Bethany Lutheran this weekend. The teams will play a doubleheader Saturday, March 30 beginning at 3 p.m. before finishing with a single game Sunday at Noon.
