Loras rallies to claim twin bill over Storm

DUBUQUE, Iowa -- Truman Schmitt drilled his fifth home run of the season as the Simpson baseball team dropped a pair of games at Loras on Saturday. The Duhawks won 7-4 in the opener and 11-5 in the finale.

Kolton Arnold has pushed his hit streak to 11 games now and has hit safely in the last 14 of 15. He has 17 hits during the streak.

Loras used a four-run fifth inning in the first game and a five-run fifth inning in the second to pull out in front to claim two victories. The Storm are now 11-12 and 3-8 in American Rivers Conference play and the Duhawks sitting at 13-11 and 7-7.

Schmitt started the game off with a bang and put one over the wall in the opening inning to give Simpson a quick 1-0 advantage.

The Duhawks responded with one in the third, before the Storm added another run in the fourth to take the lead. Nathan Carlin had a sacrifice fly to score Schmitt.

Loras scored four of its runs in the fifth when Simpson committed two errors and allowed four hits.

The Storm placed two more runs on in the eighth for a late rally, but could not do anymore damage in the ninth to fall.

Brady Held and Schmitt each had two hits during the contest as the team finished with six total.

After giving up two runs over the first four innings, Simpson placed a five-spot on the scoreboard in the fifth. The Storm tallied six hits during the scoring spree. Kolton Arnold, Keegan Perez, Carlin, Held and Schmitt all had RBIs.

Loras put a halt to the momentum in the bottom half of the frame by scoring five runs of its own to go back out in front 7-5. The Duhawks would score four more runs over the next two innings and held on to win.

Josh Breitbarth led the offense with three hits, while Devin Creger, Richie Hintz and Carlin added two each.
