Dubuque clips Storm in series opener

DUBUQUE, Iowa -- The Simpson baseball team dropped a 4-2 American Rivers Conference contest on Friday at Dubuque to move to 3-3 in league play.

The Storm (11-7) went out in front with an early 1-0 lead in the third inning. Devin Creger grounded out, which scored Brady Held.

After the Spartans (10-8-1, 3-6 A-R-C) rallied in the third and fourth innings to claim a 2-1 advantage, Simpson tied things up in the fifth. Held scored once again, this time coming off the bat of Kolton Arnold. Arnold drove the 2-1 pitch into centerfield, allowing held to score from second.

Dubuque repeated once more and scored in the bottom of the fifth to regain the lead and added another run in the seventh for good measure.

The Storm finished with seven hits, with Arnold and Held both tallying two. Richie Hintz had important at-bats as well at the plate. He had two sacrifice bunts that pushed Held into scoring position, which allowed him to score on both instances.

Brett Kauzlarich received the loss after pitching six innings. He is now 2-1 for the year.
