Storm close out season series with Coe

INDIANOLA, Iowa -- The Simpson baseball team had a tough matchup all weekend against the top team in the American Rivers Conference and No. 15 in the country, Coe and lost 8-5 and 15-5 in Saturday's doubleheader.

The Storm are now 11-17 and 3-13 in the league and the Kohawks move to an impressive 28-2 and 18-1.

Coe 8, Simpson 5
The Storm went on a scoring run in the bottom of the eighth by plating four runs to make it a game. Simpson had two doubles in the inning and to cut the deficit, but could not add anymore runs in the ninth for the upset.

Coe tallied five runs in the first five innings before the Simpson pushed one across in the bottom of the frame. Brady Held scored on a groundout from Richie Hintz to break the scoring drought.

Truman Schmitt and Zach Hollingsworth paced the team with two hits each, while Schmitt and Nathan Carlin each had doubles.

Coe 15, Simpson 5 (8 innings)
In the nightcap, the Storm bolted out to an early 5-0 lead after the first two innings of play. The hosts notched two runs in the first after another double by Schmitt plated Noah Sacco and Schmitt later scored on a double from Carlin.

In the following frame, Sacco had a two-run double and Schmitt drove him in once again.

But the lead did not hold and the Cohawks got a run back in the third, before piling on 11 runs over the last four innings to force the game into a run rule.

Zach Hollingsworth made his second start of the year and went a strong 4.1 innings and allowed three earned runs. Brett Kauzlarich was tacked with the loss after going for 2.2 innings of six-run ball.
