KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- The Simpson baseball team left Florida on Friday with a 6-1 record after winning 3-1 and 7-5 over Crown to close the week out on a high note.
The Storm return to Iowa and will open up American Rivers Conference play on Friday, March 22 against Buena Vista at 6 p.m. on McBride Field.
Simpson 3, Crown 1
Simpson fell down early in the first inning after balk was charged to Brady Held and scored a Crown runner. It took until the fourth inning for the Storm to push a run across. Truman Schmitt led the inning off with a double and advanced to third on a error by the centerfielder. Josh Breitbarth grounded out to tie things up at 1-1.
In the bottom of the sixth, Nathan Carlin and Keegan Perez each had RBI sacrifice flies to capture a 3-1 advantage.
On the mound for Simpson was the reigning A-R-C Pitcher of the Week, Held, and he showed Crown why. After the early miscue and two hits in the first, he settled down and only gave up two hits over the next seven innings of work. The freshman had 13 strikeouts for the second time this week.
The Storm collect their least amount of hits in a game this year with only two, but still managed to sneak out the victory.
Simpson 7, Crown 5
Simpson pitcher Brett Kauzlarich was cruising through six innings to tally his second win this year. He sprinkled seven hits and sat down seven batters.
The Storm survived a scare in the seventh inning by giving up five runs and letting the winning run reach first base. Three pitchers were used to collect the three outs needed to capture the victory.
After pitching a gem in the first game, Held record a RBI single in the second to give the Storm a quick 1-0 lead. Kolton Arnold repeated his teammate in the third.
In the fifth inning, Carlin ripped a two-run triple for the Storm to go out in front at 4-0 and Zach Hollingsworth followed with a triple of his own to plate Carlin and increase the lead to 5-0. The Storm would push a run across in both the sixth and seventh innings to go out in front big, until Crown made a comeback.
Carlin had a three-hit game for the first time since March 18, 2018 against Monmouth and he also leads the league with four triples.
