Storm drop series at Dubuque

DUBUQUE, Iowa -- The Simpson baseball team ran into a tough Dubuque squad on Saturday and dropped both games in the series-ending doubleheader. The Spartans won 6-0 and 3-1 over the Storm to move a spot ahead in the American Rivers Conference standings.

Simpson is now 11-9 overall and 3-5 in the league, while Dubuque is 12-8-1 and 5-6.

Dubuque 6, Simpson 0
The Spartans sprinted out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning after tallying two hits. Both teams went scoreless until the sixth, when Dubuque added one more to go up 3-0.

Simpson could not keep the Spartans off the scoreboard again as Dubuque added three more in the seventh for some insurance runs.

On offense, the Storm had four batters all receive a hit, but none were for extra bases.

Brady Leonard received the loss, but had six strikeouts on the mound.

Dubuque 3, Simpson 1
Simpson waited until the seventh inning to score and were already down 3-0 in the contest.

Truman Schmitt led the inning off with a single and was moved to third after a Kolton Arnold double. Schmitt was thrown out at home trying to score after Nathan Carlin hit a ball to first. Arnold was able to score after Carlin was caught in a rundown.

The Storm tallied seven hits, three from Arnold and two from Schmitt. Arnold now has an eight-game hitting streak and has hit safely in 16 of 20 games he has appeared in.

Tanner Jansen had seven strikeouts in the losing effort for Simpson.
