Late goal lifts Coe over Storm

INDIANOLA - Lindsay Screws connected on the winning goal in the 89th minute as Coe escaped Buxton Stadium with a 2-1 win over Simpson on Wednesday night.

Coming off a counter-attack, Screws' second goal of the match came with only 1 minute, 12 seconds remaining. Jenny Snook started the play on a cross from the left wing, giving Screws the finish.

With the win, the Kohawks (5-7, 2-2 IIAC) snapped a 12-match losing streak to Simpson.

"We came out flat tonight and got in an early hole," head coach Ryan Sander said. "In the second half we did a much better job of out-possessing them, but we weren't able to finish the chances we had."

The loss ends a three-match winning streak for the Storm (6-7-1, 2-2 IIAC), which attempted 14 more shots and put four more shots on goal than Coe.

Screws came away with the first goal of the game in the 16th minute. Just like her last goal, she found the far post from the left wing for the 1-0 Kohawk lead.

Simpson answered when Katherine Bird (Iowa City, Iowa) took a feed from Ashlee Krider (Norwalk, Iowa) for the equalizer in the 61st minute. Bird's team-leading eighth goal of the season found its way to the back of the left net to tie the match 1-1.

The Storm remain home for their next contest, a noon kickoff Saturday against Luther at Buxton Stadium.
