Second half push helps Augustana past Storm
INDIANOLA - Ninth-ranked Augustana used three second half goals to pull away from Simpson in a 4-0 win Sunday afternoon at Buxton Stadium.
The Vikings (6-0-2), ranked No. 9 in the latest D3soccer.com poll, got a goal from Allison Frckman in the 37th minute for the 1-0 lead. The one goal differential held until the 53rd minute.
Caitlin Winkelman headed ball into the right corner of the goal off a set piece from Megan Mummert, making the score 2-0. Less than a minute later, Erin Coulson found the back of the net off a deflection by Simpson keeper Jess Toyne (Bellevue, Neb.).
Playing for the second time in as many days, the Storm (3-6-1) were outshot 22-4 on the afternoon. Simpson goalkeepers saw 14 shots on goal from the Vikings. Starter Megan Petersen (Indianola, Iowa) made four saves in the first half, before Toyne made six saves in relief.
Taylor Moesle closed the scoring in the 72nd minute for Augustana, which defeated No. 14 Loras in its last outing.
Simpson begins a three-match road trip beginning next Sunday, Oct. 3 when it travels to St. Peter, Minn. to face Gustavus Adolphus.
