Patterson earns second career weekly conference honor

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Ulysses Patterson of the Simpson College men's track and field team was named the American Rivers Conference Men's Field Performer of the Week.

Patterson's honor means the Storm have now taken home at least one weekly conference honor since the start of the outdoor season at the beginning of the month. The Clinton, Iowa native is earning his second career weekly honor, with his previous honor coming during indoor season earlier this year.

Patterson won the decathlon at the Augustana Meet of Champions this past weekend, scoring 6,513 points to set a new personal best. The mark moved him up to fifth all-time in school history and also placed him fifth in Division III this season.

Patterson recorded new outdoor career bests in the long jump (6.79 meters), the 100 meters (11.11), the 110 meter hurdles (15.90) and the 1,500 meters (4:45.45). He capped off the meet with a win in the 400 meters in a time of 50.32, just .04 off his personal best.

"Ulysses put together an impressive first decathlon of the year," said Storm associate head coach James Hoffman. "He had a lot of great marks on day one and battled through tough conditions on day two. He has put himself in a position to do well at the conference meet and hopefully nationals."

The Storm are back in action on Thursday by hosting the Kip Janvrin Open, while also having a couple athletes compete at the Drake Relays.
