Men’s track and field announced as SC ESPY Team of the Year
INDIANOLA, Iowa - One National Champion, eight All-American trophies and numerous weeks spent in the national top 25 are some of the many reasons the Simpson College men's track and field team is the 2023-24 SC ESPY Team of the Year.
The Storm reached new heights in 2023-24, culminating in Spencer Moon winning the program's first national championship since 1988. Moon claimed the 10,000 meter national title on a hot evening at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, becoming only the fifth athlete in program history to win a national championship.
During the indoor season, the team was a mainstay in the USTFCCCA National Rankings, appearing in the national top 25 in all seven weeks of the regular season. The program also received its highest ever national ranking since the inception of the USTFCCCA rankings in 2010, coming in at seventh in the fifth week of the season. The Storm were also ranked in the national top 25 for multiple weeks during the outdoor season.
Simpson saw multiple athletes receive honors at the conference, regional, and national levels. Overall, the team had the most indoor all-conference honorees since 2018 and the most outdoor honorees since 2019. Moon paced the team at the conference championships, claiming three conference titles as well as league's Indoor Track MVP honor. Max Cleveland, Blake DePhillips, Brenden Godbout, and Ulysses Patterson joined Moon in earning multiple all-conference awards.
Beyond conference accolades, Cleveland, Moon, and Patterson were tabbed all-region performers both indoors and outdoors and achieved a combined eight All-American awards at the national championships. Moon brought home two First Team All-American honors to highlight the year and was named the USTFCCCA Midwest Regional Athlete of the Year in each season.
