Cleveland takes home performer of the week award

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Max Cleveland of the Simpson College men's track and field team took home the American Rivers Conference Men's Track Performer of the Week award.

Cleveland is earning his first career weekly outdoor track and field honor and second overall honor. He previously won a weekly honor during last year's indoor season.

Cleveland won the 110 meter hurdles at the Wartburg Outdoor Select on Saturday. The senior qualified for the final in second position, setting a new season-best. Cleveland won the final in a new personal best of 14.42 seconds, beating his previous best by just .01 seconds to win the event. His time is currently ranked ninth this season across Division III.

Cleveland also claimed second in the 400 meter hurdles, with a time of 55.18, just behind teammate Brenden Godbout.

"Max had a great day in the hurdle events," said Storm associate head coach James Hoffman. "He is still knocking the rust off with the transition to the outdoor season, but ran great in the 110 hurdle finals to get a personal best and top 10 time in the nation. With his ability to run a 400 we are experimenting in the 400 meter hurdles to see if it's an opportunity to place well at the conference meet. He did a great job in his first real experience and it's something we look forward to improving on."

The Storm will send a few 5,000 meter runners to Platteville, Wis., while Cleveland and the rest of the team are in Des Moines for the Jim Duncan Invitational.
