Nielsen's jersey chosen for display at Hall of Fame

INDIANOLA, Iowa – Kate Nielsen put together one of the greatest seasons in Simpson women's basketball history in 2012-13. Now, her name will stand alongside some of the greatest to ever play the sport.

For the next year, Nielsen's No. 44 road jersey will be on display in the Ring of Honor at the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in Knoxville, Tenn.

The Ring of Honor consists of over 100 jerseys hanging from the rafters of the back rotunda at the Hall, representing the top high school and college players from each season. A first team All-American, first team Academic All-American and finalist for National Player of the Year, Nielsen's resume is more than worthy.

The senior from Urbandale, Iowa (Johnston HS) ranked fifth in the nation in scoring (22.3 ppg), brought down 8.8 rebounds per game and shot 53.7 percent from the field. She was named Iowa Conference Most Valuable Player and took home conference player of the week honors seven times.

A 5-11 forward, Nielsen scored 648 points during the 2012-13 season, the second-highest single-season total in program history. She set Simpson single-season records for rebounds (256), free throws made (176) and 3-point percentage (50.7) and her 83 steals rank third. She closed her career with 1,258 points and 642 rebounds, becoming one of six players in school history with 1,000 points and 500 rebounds. She is one of only two to add 150-plus steals (184) and is only the second player in school history to record more than 1,000 points in less than four seasons, doing so in three.

Nielsen led the Storm to a school-record tying 27 wins in 2012-13 and a trip to the third round of the NCAA Tournament. Simpson went 27-3, captured a sixth straight Iowa Conference Championship and finished the season ranked No. 10 in the USA TODAY Sports/WBCA Top 25 Coaches' Poll.
