Simpson hosts annual Hot Shot event
The Simpson basketball teams took part in the annual Hot Shot event on Tuesday, Jan. 29 at Cowles Fieldhouse.
Members from the men's and women's teams volunteered at the annual event, which is a cooperative effort between Simpson College and the Heartland Area Education Agency for secondary students with special needs. Participants went through 13 basketball/fitness related stations, performed school cheers and took part in a group dance at the conclusion of the day.
The first Hot Shot event took place in 1986 and moved locations a few times before finding a home at Simpson, which has served as host for more than 20 years.
“This is an important event because the participants get to be active, have fun and everything is modified to meet their needs,” said Robin Olberding, Adapted PE Consultant at Heartland AEA. “Students are able to participate in all activities at whatever level they can and are able to be active participants rather than spectators.”
Participants were treated to a 3-point shooting contest between the men’s and women’s basketball teams as well as a dunk contest between members of the men’s team.
In addition to providing entertainment, Simpson basketball players were assigned to stations and had the opportunity to interact with the students throughout the morning.
“This is a great way for Simpson students to give back to the community,” Olberding said. “They are able to see a variety of students with special needs having fun, interacting with friends and being regular kids.”
