Nielsen named to academic all-district first team

INDIANOLA, Iowa – Simpson women's basketball player Kate Nielsen earned a spot on the 2013 Capital One Academic All-District® 8 First Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), it was announced Thursday.

It is the second such honor for the senior from Urbandale, Iowa, who also received a first team nod as a junior in 2012. Nielsen owns a 3.89 cumulative GPA in exercise science and will enroll in the doctor of physical therapy program at Des Moines University following graduation.

Nielsen recently surpassed the 1,000-point milestone for her career, is one of six players in Simpson history with 1,000 points and 500 rebounds and is one of only two with 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 150 steals. The 5-11 forward averages a near double-double with 21.2 points and 9.5 rebounds per game, leading the Storm to a 19-1 record overall, a 9-0 mark in the Iowa Conference and a No. 8 ranking in the nation.

Joining Nielsen on the first team are Tolu Alabi (Grinnell), Camille Marie (Cornell), Hannah Munger (George Fox) and Kim Takaoka (Chapman).

To be eligible for consideration, student-athletes must own a cumulative GPA of at least 3.3 on a 4.0 scale. As a first team selection, Nielsen advances to the Capital One Academic All-America® Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected in February.
