Simpson's upset bid falls short against No. 7 Amherst

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Marcia Voigt hit the game-winning jumper with two seconds left, spoiling a career performance by Kate Nielsen as No. 7 Amherst beat No. 13 Simpson 62-60 in women's basketball at the Land of Magic Classic on Friday.

Simpson came back from seven down in the final three minutes to tie the game at 60 with 20 seconds left thanks to a steal and layup by Nielsen. Voigt hit the game-winner on the next possession as Amherst remained unbeaten.

Nielsen was dominant, setting career-highs with 35 points and 15 rebounds in the losing effort for the Storm (9-1). She went 9-for-10 from the free throw line and added five steals.

Megan Robertson finished with 12 points and 12 rebounds for the Lord Jeffs (9-0), who won the first meeting between the two teams.

Neither team led by more than five in the first half, when Nielsen gave Simpson a 7-2 lead on the first of her two 3-pointers. Cheyenne Pritchard gave Amherst a 29-27 at the half when she nailed a 3 with 49 seconds left.

Simpson closes play at the Land of Magic Classic Saturday when it faces Kenyon at 11 a.m./Noon EST.

Notes: Nielsen's 35 points are tied for the fifth-most in Simpson history and are the most since Kerri Karsten scored 39 against Loras in 1996.
