Moon takes home male athlete of the week award after record-breaking performance
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - For the fifth time this season, Spencer Moon of the Simpson College men's track and field team was named the American Rivers Conference Male Athlete of the Week, as well the Men's Track Athlete of the Week.
Moon earned the honor after his record-breaking performance in the 5,000 meters last Friday evening at the Wis.-Platteville Invitational. In addition to his five weekly track and field honors, Moon earned two weekly awards in cross country, giving him seven across his entire 2023-24 senior season.
The Lake City, Iowa native clocked a blistering time of 13:51.63 in the event, finishing second in a field of 187 runners. Moon's time broke his own school record, as well as the conference record set by Wartburg's Christopher Collet last year. The new conference record now means he owns four total conference records, as well as the championship meet record in the indoor 3,000 meters. Moon's time is the fastest in Division III this season, as well as being the third-fastest all-time.
"Spencer never looked better than he did Friday night in Platteville," said Storm director of track and field and cross country Heath Moenck. "We are incredibly proud of all that he's accomplished and are excited to cheer him on during the final races of his storied career."
Simpson is scheduled to resume action on Saturday at Grinnell.
