Moon, Cleveland have historic days in Boston

BOSTON - Spencer Moon and Max Cleveland of the Simpson College men's track and field team had historic days by breaking school and conference records in their respective events.

Cleveland won his heat in a tame 8.15 to qualify easily as one of the four heat winners. The senior then reset the record book with a blistering 7.95 in the final to take second place in a field full of Division I talent.

"Max had a great last two weeks focusing on his start and getting over the first hurdle," said Storm associate head coach James Hoffman. "It was great to see it really paid off on his trip to Boston."

Moon clocked a time of 13:59.20 in the 5,000 meters to lower his own school and conference records in the event. Competing among former national champions and World Championship participants, he became the seventh person in Division III history to break the 14-minute barrier.

"Spencer added to his legendary career tonight," said Storm director of track and field and cross country Heath Moenck. "To be only the seventh individual to break 14 minutes in the indoor 5,000 meters is quite the accomplishment and I could not be more proud of him."
