Moon takes home athlete of the week honors after historic weekend
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Spencer Moon of the Simpson College men's track and field team was named the American Rivers Conference Male Athlete of the Week after his historic weekend at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational in Boston.
Moon was also named the A-R-C Men's Track Performer of the Week after his superb performance in the 5,000 meters on Saturday. Moon lowered his own conference and school records by seven seconds, clocking a time of 13:59.20 in the event to become just the seventh Division III athlete to break the 14-minute barrier.
"Spencer's performance on Saturday in Boston was a truly special one," said Storm director of track and field and cross country Heath Moenck. "Breaking the 14 minute barrier in the 5K is remarkable at any level and it's pretty cool to see it done in a Simpson uniform."
Moon's time currently ranks seventh all-time and sixth all-time for athletes who ran on a normal 200 meter track.
The Lake City, Iowa native is earning the second indoor track performer of the week of the season and his career, adding on to the two outdoor track and three cross country performer of the week awards across his decorated career.
Moon will compete in the distance medley relay at the Eagle Open in La Crosse, Wis. on Friday, with most of the roster heading to Waverly, Iowa to compete at the Liz Wuertz Invite on Saturday.
