Moon, Patterson earn All-American honors on final day of indoor championships

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Spencer Moon and Ulysses Patterson of the Simpson College men's track and field team each earned Second Team All-American Honors on the final day of the NCAA Division III Indoor Championships.

Moon finished 14th in the 3,000 meters with a time of 8:22.20 to earn the second track and field All-American honor of the meet and his career. Moon becomes the first athlete in Storm history to win multiple All-American awards at a single meet since the trio of Lonnie Balmer, Marek Wensel, and Damon Youmans at the 1992 outdoor championships in the 4x100 and 4x400 meter relays.

"Spencer capped off a banner indoor season today," said Storm director of track and field and cross country Heath Moenck. "Earning his second All-American award of the weekend was terrific. He has had an amazing indoor season and we are equally excited for the upcoming outdoor season."

Patterson started the day in 14th in the heptathlon. After staying in the same place after the 60 meter hurdles, Patterson set a season-best mark in the pole vault with a jump of 3.85 meters, moving to 12th. The Clinton, Iowa native then finished third in the 1,000 meters in a time of 2:42.83, rising up to ninth to cement his All-American status. Patterson's final tally of 4,918 points broke the school record for the third time this season.

"Ully gave a remarkable effort today performing at or above his personal best in all three events," said Storm associate head coach James Hoffman. "Doing a multi event in three straight weeks is tough on the body and he was definitely feeling the impact of that today, but he gutted it out for a new school record and an All-American honor in the process."
