Storm gear up for indoor national championships

INDIANOLA, Iowa - Four student-athletes between the Simpson College men's and women's track and field teams will compete at the NCAA Division III Indoor National Championships, beginning tomorrow in Virginia Beach, Va.

Spencer Moon, Ulysses Patterson, and Max Cleveland will compete for the men's team, while Lara Kallem is the lone representative on the women's side. Moon will compete in two events, the 3,000 and the 5,000 meters. Cleveland is set to compete in the 60 meter hurdles, while Patterson is slated to compete in the two-day heptathlon. Kallem will race in the 5,000 meters in her first career track and field national meet appearance.

WHAT'S AT STAKE

  • First Team All-America status is awarded to athletes finishing 1-8 in each event, while Second Team All-American status is awarded to those finishing 9-16 (individual events) and 9-10 (relays) in each event.

ABOUT THE STORM

  • Moon defended his 3,000 and 5,000 meter titles at the American Rivers Conference Championships, breaking the meet and facility record in the 3,000. The Lake City, Iowa native is currently ranked top five nationally in both events and looks to earn a track and field All-American honor for the first time in his career. His previous best finish was 10th in the 3,000 meters at the 2022 championships.
  • Cleveland is ranked third in the 60 meter hurdles, coming off a second-place finish at the conference championships. The local Indianola native holds both the school and conference records in the event and is aiming towards his second career All-American honor after claiming the distinction in the 110 meter hurdles in the outdoor championships last spring.
  • Patterson checks in at 15th in the heptathlon, breaking the school record twice over the course of the year. The senior from Clinton, Iowa qualified for the national meet with a school-record 4,871 points at last weekend's Wartburg Qualifier.
  • Kallem is ranked 20th in the 5,000 meters, holding the school record in the event. The Dallas Center, Iowa native also broke the meet record at the Wartburg Qualifier en route to winning the race.
