Moon’s record 5,000 meter time places him among DIII greats

PLATTEVILLE, Wis.- Spencer Moon of the Simpson College men's track and field team set a new school and conference record in the 5,000 meters at the Wis.-Platteville Invitational on Friday evening.

Moon finished second in the race of 187 runners, clocking a time of 13:51.63 that places him third in Division III history. Moon broke his old school record by around 13 seconds and the previous conference record by six seconds.

"I'm running out of superlatives to describe Spencer and his performances," said Storm director of track and field and cross country Heath Moenck. "Tonight was special and to run the No. 3 time in the history of Division III to break the conference record was a lot of fun."

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Moon was in the top pack from start to finish, falling just shy of unattached Liam Newhart in the final straightaway after a dual over the final three laps.
  • In addition to the third-best time in Division III history, Moon's time is the fastest this season.
  • Ean Warrick also broke his career best in the 5,000 meters in Platteville, running a 14:45.63, good for fifth all-time in school history.
  • Over in Des Moines at the Jim Duncan Inviational, Joseph Sams clocked a new personal best in the 100 meters, with a time of 10.84, moving him up to seventh place in school history.
  • Kendrick Achebe also cracked the 11-second barrier for the second time in his career.
  • Adam Gruhn set a new personal best in the 800 meters in a time of 1:57.33.
